Requiem For A Marriage

Chances are, we all know someone who is divorced -- probably several someones. In 2000, there were over 957,200 finalized divorces in the United States. The U.S. Census Bureau says that 50 percent of all marriages entered into today will end in divorce. That's a lot of broken homes, heartaches and paperwork, not to mention money spent on attorney fees and court costs.

I have to ask how we can stop this trend. Why aren’t people as committed to keeping their relationships together as they were in my grandparent’s day? Couples worked hard at keeping the families together and it was virtually impossible to find a divorced person.

The difference between then and today is that generally only one parent worked while the mother stayed home and looked after the children. There was less pressure on people to have a career, a nice house, the latest car and all the other material possessions to be found in most houses today. To achieve this both parents now work and their children are in full time daycare.

Materialism and huge debt I believe is the reason for so many divorces.
